Originally designed by J.H. Dearle in 1892 as a wallpaper pattern, "Blackthorn" was adapted for machine-printed fabric in 1975 by Sanderson, where it gained substantial popularity. Modern reproductions of the design maintain the authentic colors of the original wallpaper samples, and the fabric's mottled appearance imparts a hand-printed aesthetic.
